Mobile banking has seen a slow take up in the Netherlands in comparison to other countries. At the moment Rabobank is ahead with offering a mobile banking application for smart phones, SMS payments service and an iPhone application. However from this month onwards more developments can be expected as ABN AMRO and ING have introduced an iPhone application.
ABN AMRO thus far only allows customers to check their balance using the iPhone application. ABN AMRO announces it as the first step in developing the application, with viewing latest transactions and making payments to follow in the near future. After downloading the application, customers can choose their own access code and are required to activate the service within Internet Banking as an additional security measure.
The ING iPhone application let customers check their balance and latest transactions (maximum of ten). Customers can also search for an ATM and ING branch and have access to ING service numbers. In order to use the ING application, customers are required to have a Windows Live ID and be registered for ING Buddy within Internet Banking (NB. ING Buddy is a Windows Messenger chat service where, after registration, customers can ask questions and can request their balance and latest transactions).
Rabobank introduced their iPhone application earlier this year. Using the application customers can check their balance, latest transactions and make internal payments. At the start of this month the application was improved based on a test amongst 650 users. Also responses from different social media sites were taken into account. Changes were made to the layout of the application, more detail is provided on transactions and customers can cancel future payments.
More can be expected from mobile banking in the Netherlands in the near future.
